The Holy Ghost is a person whose mission is truly called and sent to us form the Lord. Through Him we can know the truth of all things and learn all that the Lord would have us know. Through Him we can truly come to know our Father in Heaven and our brother, Jesus Christ.

John 14:15–17, 26–27; 15:26–27; 16:7–8, 13–14. The Savior’s Instructions about the Holy Ghost

  1. As you study the following verses, make a list of what the Savior taught about (1) what the Holy Ghost does and (2) what disciples must do to receive the Holy Ghost:
    • John 14:15–17 Keep the Commandments. The Holy Ghost will dwell with us even though others may not be able to believe.
    • John 14:26–27 The Holy Ghost can bring all things to our remembrance and can teach us all. We must let our hearts be troubled.
    • John 15:26–27 The Holy Ghost will bear witness to us and we will bear witness to the world.
    • John 16:7–8 Because the Savior had to leave, He sent the Holy Ghost to be the help we will need.
    • John 16:13–14 The Holy Ghost will always testify of the Savior and Glorify Him.
  2. Add to your list above as you study the following resources:
    • Institute student manual Points to Ponder, “The Holy Ghost Brings Man to His Fullest Potential” (p. 168)
    • Institute student manual Points to Ponder, “As a Messenger of the Godhead, the Holy Ghost Teaches Faithful Members” (p. 168)
    • Bible Dictionary, “Holy Ghost” (p. 704)
  3. Review your list of what the Holy Ghost does. Then write responses to the following tasks:
    • Describe how the Holy Ghost helped the Apostles fulfill their missions after the Savior’s death and resurrection. He offered the needed guidance and confirmations of truth. Allowing them to continue to have an unwavering knowledge of the Savior and the importance of continuing His mission.
    • Write a paragraph about a time when the Holy Ghost blessed you in one of the ways you listed above. Give an example of how the Holy Ghost has inspired you. The Holy Ghost has blessed me because He has borne witness to me of the divinity of the Savior, the truthfulness of all Joseph Smith has done, the knowledge of our modern day leaders, and the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.

The Lord does not condone leaders who desire to lead those they have dominion over in a way that would be considered heartless, or selfish. A true leader is one who is willing to give all he has in order to lift and teach and save the ones he leads.

John 13:1–17; Luke 22:24–30; Mark 10:43–45. The Savior Taught the Apostles about Leadership

  1. Study John 13:1–17; Luke 22:24–30; Mark 10:43–45. Write a paragraph or two about how the application of these teachings makes leadership in the Church of Jesus Christ different from what the world usually describes as leadership.
    • The world tends to think that if you are a leader it means that you are set up above those who you lead. That it will put you in such a position that you will most likely never have to do anything for yourself and others will answer to your every demand. They tend to think that a leader has power over them and if the do anything contrary to what the leader says, they may be condemned to an awful punishment. The Savior said a leader is something much different. He stated that a leader should be one who not only has been designated to lead, but more over is one who has been ordained to serve. A true leader will put the will of those he leads far ahead of his own will, so long as it is in line with the true and correct principles we know. Never is a leader supposed to be one who has unrighteous dominion over those he leads.
  2. Write a paragraph or two about a time when one of your Church leaders or someone in the scriptures served and led in the way Jesus Christ taught.
    • Thomas Monson, and all of his counselors and the Apostles are ones who are a shining example of what true leadership should be. There lives work is solely set up to be committed to the service of their Lord, His Church, and all those who fall within the curtain of their callings, which is all the Earth. They never ask for anything from the church other than that we are willing to heed there counsel as counsel from the Lord.

After reading this assignment I have come to have an even greater realization that no one on this earth knows the day the Lord will come. All we can do is be faithful in all that we have learned and strive to learn all we can. Then live everyday as if it were the day the Savior will return and ensure that our lamps are timed and full of oil.

Mark 13; Luke 21:5–38; Joseph Smith—Matthew. Preparing for the Savior’s Second Coming

  1. Review Mark 13:5, 9, 23, 33, 35, 37 and identify the words take heed and watch in each verse. List at least three things from this chapter that believers could watch for in order to be prepared to meet the Lord.
The can make sure no man will deceive them.
The Savior has told them all things.
We must watch and pray, we know not when the time is.

  1. Explain in writing any other additional truths that are taught in the following references about how to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
    • Doctrine and Covenants 87:8 We must be ready at all times for the coming of the Lord, we know not when it comes, but it comes fast.
    • Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:32  There will be abominations and desolations, fulfilling the prophecy.
    • Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:37  IF we study and love the scriptures, we will be saved in the last days.
    • Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:46–50 We cannot delay the day of our preparations. The time is at hand and the Savior could come at anytime.
    • Doctrine and Covenants 33:17 We must be like the virgins who had their lamps trimmed and oiled, ready for when He comes.
    • Doctrine and Covenants 45:56–57 If we are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for our guide, and have not been deceived we shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day.

Below is a chart that not only gives a nice breakdown of the last week of the Savior, but also give scriptural references in the four gospels to help you see where the information comes from. This chart is not of my own design, but is actually a resource that was used when we were teaching our Priest quorum this past Sunday. I really find it to be a fascinating representation of what the Savior had to endure in His last days. It is amazing all that happened in such a shot time. After reading through these, it really helped to strengthen my testimony of, not only the Savior, but of the importance it is to take the time to record what happens in our lives. If Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John had not done so, we would not have the blessing of the knowledge of the many miracles, struggles, and the life the Savior lived, He truly is the Son of the Father.
